SUMMARY:MGA MID-GRID Webinar | Pew Research - Distributed Energy Resources (DERs)
DESCRIPTION:Brian Watts\, officer with The Pew Charitable Trusts energy modernization project\, will present recent Pew research on how states can scale distributed energy resources (DERs)—including battery storage\, rooftop solar\, microgrids\, and virtual power plants—to meet growing energy demand and support an affordable\, reliable grid. The presentation will highlight examples of how states have advanced DERs and share practical recommendations—such as permitting reform\, improving grid access\, and integrating DERs into utility planning—for policymakers to scale these solutions to play an enhanced role on our grid. \n\n\n\n\nRecording\n\n\n\n\n\nSlides

SUMMARY:MGA EEPIC Framework Discussion
DESCRIPTION:The energy system is under pressure. Across the Midwest\, states face unprecedented demand growth\, increasingly severe weather\, and a growing threat landscape of physical and cyber attacks\, all while coordinating planning across a fragmented network of state agencies\, utilities\, regulators\, and other partners who each hold a piece of the puzzle but rarely work from the same page. Effective energy security means bringing those pieces together\, and no single agency can do it alone. To meet that challenge\, MGA convened an advisory group of subject matter experts spanning state energy offices\, public utility commissions\, utilities\, ISO/RTOs\, and emergency management. Over two years\, this group produced the Energy and Emergency Planning Integration Crosswalk (EEPIC)\, a product of real-world practitioner expertise. The EEPIC gives state offices a structured\, flexible resource to align policy goals\, regulatory authorities\, and planning processes into a cohesive approach to energy security\, scaled to each state’s own context and priorities. \n\n\n\nThis virtual session is the culmination of this process. First\, hear from Jonathon Monken and Braxton Duncan from Converge Strategies\, LLC\, who designed and executed the development of the EEPIC. They will provide a high-level overview of the framework’s development\, structure\, and applications for the state. We will then have a panel of participants who have helped shape this effort and will discuss how states can put the framework into practice. That panel includes: \n\n\n\n\nMike Deising\, MISO\n\n\n\nJim Harmening\, Illinois Commerce Commission\n\n\n\nChris Watkins\, Minnesota Department of Commerce\n\n\n\n\n\nRecording

SUMMARY:MID-GRID Webinar: Power After the Storm
DESCRIPTION:Join the MGA to learn about a new report from the Union of Concerned Scientists that discusses the challenges to the grid caused by extreme weather events. In this report\, they analyze the last decade of power outage data in the central United States\, alongside media reports and peer-reviewed science\, to explore three key questions: – Which extreme weather events have been most consequential for power outages over the last decade? – What can we learn about the patterns of impacts from the worst of these outage events?– How are the extreme weather events most consequential for power outages in this region expected to change? Authors of the report including: Rachel Licker (lead author) Sam Gomberg\, Amanda Fencl and Sital Sathia will present on their finds. SUMMARY:Generation Fleet Change Pathways and Cost Implications
DESCRIPTION:MID-GRID 2035 participants will join a discussion of technological and regulatory approaches for maximizing benefits of transmission development for landowners and local communities. Discussion could include opportunities for conducting outreach to engage stakeholders upstream in the process—early and often—especially with groups that have often not been adequately represented in past decisions\, including rural residents\, communities of color\, and sovereign Tribal Nations. Participants will also discuss opportunities for unlocking co-benefits via transmission infrastructure deployment and how transmission planning and siting process can be structured to minimize conflict and broadly support beneficial outcomes for all stakeholders. \n\nWatch Recording
